Medication Management, Therapy and Self Help
The three cornerstones of care I provide are medication management, therapy and self-help guidance. When used together, they provide a powerful framework to help clients achieve optimal mental health.
Medication: Psychiatric medication may not be necessary for all clients. However, for those who have a genetic predisposition for attention deficit, anxiety, depression, insomnia, mood swings, panic or psychosis, medication may be very helpful to provide relief from these debilitating symptoms. I like to look at this phase of treatment as similar to jump starting a car's battery. The psychiatric medications I prescribe help to improve the neuro-circuitry of the brain and reduce or eliminate uncomfortable symptoms which can become barriers to a quality life.
Therapy: This part of treatment begins with assessing the triggers which produce symptoms. We explore past life experiences, trauma, loss, and current stressors to understand in what way patterns of thinking may have a negative impact on a client's life. Therapy enhances new ways of thinking, development of new positive attitudes, and development of new coping strategies. This second phase of treatment is similar to getting into a car (your life) and learning to drive it in a new, more satisfying direction.
Self Help: In the third cornerstone of treatment I can help a client come up with and evaluate ways to handle problems such as substance abuse, getting more exercise, improving nutrition, sleep and sleep hygiene. A common topic of self help includes the benefits of taking prescribed medication on a regular basis and interacting with work, family and friends in more positive ways. This phase of treatment depends 100 percent on clients trying out and practicing new behaviors we have discussed in therapy. This is like driving the car (one's life) down the road again and deciding, at an intersection, whether to make a U turn and go back to old ways, or take a new direction in life.
Please feel free to call my office to discuss how we can develop a treatment plan that is personalized to your needs. Treatment is a partnership and the client is always the captain of the team. My role is to listen actively to what is being said so that together we can best achieve your goals. If you are already seeing a therapist, I am happy to consult with him or her so we are all working in harmony to coordinate our approaches.
